Pitcher Burleigh Grimes, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, demonstrating a spitball pitch. Major League Baseball declared the spitball an illegal pitch in 1920 but, a grandfather clause allowed the 17 remaining spitball pitchers to continue throwing the pitch until their retirement.Image provided by Getty Images.
